Rutgers Conference on Struggling Readers and Writers
November 22, 2008

Diane DeFord, professor from Clemson University, will be presenting the keynote address on building partnerships for student learning and sessions on literacy coaching and Response to Intervention. Registration forms and other session descriptions are on-line at www.gse.rutgers.edu/conferences .

Reading Recovery®, an early literacy intervention for the lowest-achieving first graders, is an important part of a school's comprehensive literacy plan. It includes an instructional program for children, training and on-going staff development, a school or district implementation plan, and monitoring and evaluating student achievement. Students receive 30 minutes of daily, one-on-one instruction from highly skilled Reading Recovery teachers for 12-20 weeks. This instruction enables students to make accelerated gains in reading and writing. They reach average literacy levels for their age group and continue learning in their classrooms.

According to the NYU Steinhardt New Jersey Reading Recovery report, "2005-2006 was another very successful year for Reading Recovery in New Jersey. The intervention’s outstanding student database accounts for every participating first
grader, without exception."

The New Jersey Reading Recovery Network is an association of Teacher Leaders and Site Coordinators working in the Ten Reading Recovery Training Sites throughout the state. The Network's primary goal is to help school districts plan for implementation of this early intervention through initial and on-going professional development for Reading Recovery teachers. In addition to being a New Jersey professional development provider, the Network is affiliated with both Rutgers, the State University Graduate School of Education, and New York University. As advocates for public support of Reading Recovery, the Network also sponsors a statewide Reading Recovery and Early Literacy Conference to promote early literacy best practices.
